The Calgary Police Service conducts a Vulnerable Sector Search using the applicant’s name, gender, and date of birth. If no record is identified, a completed Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search will be issued.

If the search is inconclusive, fingerprint verification will be required. Fingerprints are submitted to the Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Service (CCRTIS) for verification. Where there is a confirmation of a record suspension for a sexual offence, the information may be reviewed by the Minister of Public Safety to determine whether disclosure is authorized under applicable legislation. If authorized, the Calgary Police Service must obtain the applicant’s written consent before releasing any record information to the requesting organization.

Please note: Youth are not eligible to receive a Record Suspension and therefore do not appear in the Pardoned Sex Offender Database. As a result, the Vulnerable Sector component of a Police Information Check for youth will always be clear. Accordingly, the Calgary Police Service will not process Vulnerable Sector Searches for applicants aged 14 to 17.

Police Information Checks with vulnerable sector are performed only with the written consent of the applicant and only by the police agency for the area where the applicant lives.

Before requesting a Police Information Check, organizations and employers should ensure they understand their legal obligations regarding the collection, use, storage, and disclosure of personal information obtained through the check. This includes compliance with Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) for private-sector organizations and non-profits, and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) for public bodies.

Self-declaration of a criminal record is a process where the applicant may declare their adult criminal record of convictions to the Calgary Police Service. This may allow the Calgary Police Service to assess the accuracy of the applicant’s criminal record information without attending our office for additional processing.

We do not disclose results or discuss applications with a third party. Information will be disclosed to the applicant only. They will receive an email with access instructions to obtain their results. Please have the applicant email us directly should they require assistance.

It is the choice of the applicant to decide whether they wish to discuss the results of the Police Information Check with the requesting organization/employer. The role of the Calgary Police Service is to provide the applicant with the results of the Police Information Check. The hiring organization/employer is responsible for determining the suitability of the applicant for the position. The result of any Police Information Check is just one component of a screening process.
