Verification of Police Information Check Certificates

Organizations can verify the authenticity of a Police Information Check (PIC) certificate by scanning the QR code displayed on the document. The QR code links to access an electronic copy of the certificate, allowing organizations to confirm that the document is valid and has not been altered.

Certificates can also be verified by the Calgary Police Service watermark on the certificate or by contacting the applicant to provide an email with the website, document number and PIN so you can directly access the results.

Hardcopy Certificates can be verified by the Calgary Police Service watermark and embossed seal on the certificate.

Organization Accounts

Organizations can register for an Organization Account if they wish to pay for their applicants' Police Information Checks (PICs) directly. Organization Accounts allow you to pre-purchase vouchers and email them to applicants.

Voucher redemption is completed entirely online. Once an applicant redeems a voucher, by clicking the link and starting their application, the voucher cannot be reused. Applicants complete their registration and application online, and the results are returned directly to them to share as they choose.

There are two MAIN types of Police Information Checks.

Police Information Check without Vulnerable Sector Screening (PIC)

This check is for applications who will NOT be in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons.

The Calgary Police Service uses three search mechanisms:

SENTRY (Police Information Management System) - Local records of the applicant's involvement with Calgary Police Service.
JOIN (Justice Online Information Network) - The Alberta Court system.
CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre) system and R.C.M.P. National repository in Ottawa.

Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (PIC VS)

This check is restricted to applicants in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons.

When applying for a PIC-VS, you do not need to also apply for a PIC for the same position, as the PIC-VS includes both the PIC and the VS.

The Calgary Police Service uses three search mechanisms:

SENTRY (Police Information Management System) - Local records of the applicant's involvement with Calgary Police Service.
JOIN (Justice Online Information Network) - The Alberta Court system.
CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre) system and R.C.M.P. National repository in Ottawa.

It is the police service that verifies that the position meets the requirements for a vulnerable sector check. Vulnerable sector searches are only a query of the Pardoned Sex Offender database and are one portion of our comprehensive police record checks. In order to determine a criminal history or a pattern of relevant behavior that would present a potential risk to the safety of the public, we look at the federal, provincial, and local databases and disclose as necessary.

**Applicants can only apply for a PIC VS if they live in the City of Calgary.

The organization requesting the police check must have a head office in Canada for a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector to be processed.

Please note: Being in the vicinity of vulnerable persons does not qualify for a PIC-VS.

This Police Information Check only provides information found at the time of the check, on the above listed systems. The Calgary Police Service does not guarantee completeness of the information, as we are limited to information available on these systems. This check does not include information found in any other jurisdiction's local police information system; nor does it include court information of any other provinces, except convictions registered on the National Repository for Canada and information entered onto the Canadian Police Information Centre System.
