Please be advised that if you are applying for a Vulnerable Sector Record Check, you do not need to also apply for a basic Police Criminal Record Check (PCRC) or a Police Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (PCRJMC). Not all employment or volunteer opportunities are eligible for a Vulnerable Sector Check.
Please note: those under the age of 18 are NOT able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check. Only applicants under the age of 18 that are applying for any employment in the municipal, provincial or federal government jobs are able to apply for a criminal record check (CRC).
You cannot apply on behalf of another person. Authentication questions will be based on the applicant's personal credit file, and the questions are timed to ensure a prompt response and to further enhance security and privacy. If you fail to authenticate your identification, you will be required to upload photos of your two pieces of valid Government issued identification, one ID with a photo, and take a selfie holding the same two ID provided.
The Police Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check also includes the first level - basic CRC.
The turnaround period for police record checks is up to TWO (2) WEEKS.
There is no PRIORITY service. Record check applications are processed in the order in which they are received.
If you need an Exempted (Broad) Record Check under the Child, Youth, and Family Services Act (CYFSA) or the Intercountry Adoption Act (IAA), you may use this website. An Exempted (Broad) Record Check may take up to thirty (30) days to complete. An Exempted (Broad) Record Check will contain either the results of a VSC or CRJMC.

This check is intended for applicants who are involved as a volunteer, employee or in any situation where a basic PCRC is requested (i.e., retail or immigration).
The Police Criminal Record Check will include the following information:
Criminal convictions from CPIC and/or local databases.
Summary convictions (previous 5 years) when identified.
Findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act within the applicable disclosure period.

This check is intended for applicants who are seeking volunteer and/or employment with agencies who require a police criminal record check along with local police involvement, and other systems/records where authorized.
The Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check may include the following information (the same as a PCRC and:
Criminal convictions from CPIC and/or local databases.
Summary convictions (previous 5 years) when identified.
Findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act within the applicable disclosure period.
Outstanding entries, such as charges and warrants (pending charges), judicial orders, Peace Bonds, Probation and Prohibition Orders.
Absolute and conditional discharges (for 1 or 3 years respectively).
This check is restricted to applicants seeking employment and/or volunteering in a position of trust or authority over children or vulnerable persons in Canada only. (This means more than having contact with children or vulnerable persons.) This check will include offence information, including convictions, outstanding warrants, charges, judicial orders, and sexual offence convictions for which the individual has received a record suspension (pardon) where authorized by the Minister of Public Safety. Non-conviction information shall be released only when it meets the Exceptional Disclosure Assessment.
The Police Vulnerable Sector Check will include the following (the same as a CRC and PRJMC) and:
Criminal convictions from CPIC and/or local databases.
Summary convictions (previous 5 years) when identified.
Outstanding entries, such as charges and warrants, judicial orders, Peace Bonds, Probation and Prohibition Orders.
Findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act within the applicable disclosure period.
Absolute and Conditional Discharges (for 1 or 3 years respectively).
Dispositions of Not Criminally Responsible by Reason of Mental Disorder.
A review will be conducted of all police contacts. Non convictions are criminal charges that did not result in a conviction in court. However, if the information meets the Exceptional Disclosure Assessment it will be released under the authority of the Police Services Act.
All record suspensions as authorized for release by the Minister of Public Safety.
Adoption
Persons requiring records checks for the purposes of Adoption are to use the Exempted (Broad) Record Check for Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.
Kinship
Persons requiring record checks for the purposes of Kinship are to use the Exempted (Broad) Record Check application with the Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
Non-Parent Custody Applicant Record Check
Persons requiring a Non-Parent Custody Applicant Record Check (through a Court Order) cannot use the online screening process. We recommend you make an appointment, prior to attending at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, by calling (705) 949-6300 x 326 to complete this application. Office hours are Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 580 Second Line East.
