Types of Police Information Checks
There are two types of police information checks (PIC and PIC VS). The nature and the responsibilities of the position you are applying for will determine which type of check you will require. In all cases you should consult with the agency, organization or employer that requires you to obtain a police information check to determine which one you need. Please note: If you are seeking a 'Local Police Records Check' as part of the Record Suspension (Pardon) application process, do not use an online police check as it is not appropriate for this purpose. If you are seeking a Certified RCMP Criminal Record Check by digital fingerprinting process, please click here for information on our fingerprinting services.

Police Information Check without Vulnerable Sector Screening (PIC)
This check is for applications who will NOT be in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons.
Databases checked for a Police Information Check:- Canada's National Repository of Criminal Records – Criminal Convictions, conditional and absolute discharges
- Alberta Justice Online Information Network – Criminal and provincial statute dispositions and any pending criminal or provincial statute charges
- Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) – Current court orders, warrants, prohibition orders, peace bonds, recognizance orders
-
Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (PIC VS)
This check is restricted to applicants in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons. If your application is being used outside of Canada, we are unable to process a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (VS). It is the police service that verifies that the position meets the requirements for a vulnerable sector check.
You can only apply for a PIC VS if you live in the City of Edmonton and the following cities and towns in the Greater Edmonton Area:- Beaumont
- Sherwood Park
- St Albert
- Morinville
- Fort Saskatchewan
- Leduc
- Spruce Grove
- Stony Plain
When applying for a PIC VS you do not need to also apply for a PIC for the same position, as the PIC VS includes both the PIC and the VS.
This check will include the databases mentioned above for a PIC along with:- Local Police Records – Police occurrences/information
- National Repository of Criminal Records – Pardoned sex offender records
Here are some common examples of when a PIC or a PIC VS may be required.
The Edmonton Police Service has completed the review process for Police Information Checks for youth applicants.
The Edmonton Police Service will now be accepting applications from youth applicants (12-17 years old).
Please note for youth applicants that hold a position with a non-government agency if you have any convictions or information to disclose under the AACP disclosure guidelines please do not apply. The Edmonton Police Service will be unable to complete your application, and no refund will be provided. If you are a youth applicant with any convictions, please do not apply until you reach the age of 18 or have a position with a government agency.
