Destruction of Fingerprints and Photographs

Barrie Police will not routinely destroy adult identification records where charges are dismissed, withdrawn, stayed (after the appropriate waiting period), acquitted or not proceeded with. Barrie Police Service will consider the destruction of fingerprints and photographs upon receiving a written request from the person who is subject of the fingerprints/photographs or their solicitor when:
  • The accused is a first-time offender with no prior involvement with the police as a suspect
  • There is no record of a criminal conviction
  • A peace bond is not in effect for the party requesting destruction
  • One year after a stay of proceedings

Release of Completed Police Record Check

Criminal Record Check (CRC) / Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)

The Police Service will provide the results of a completed Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) only to you, the applicant.

It is your decision to discuss the results of a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) with the agency where you want to work or volunteer.

The role of the Police Service is to provide you with the results of the Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC). It is the responsibility of the volunteer or employment agency to determine your suitability for the position.

Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

The Police Service will complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) based on your name, gender and date of birth, as well as, gender and date of birth. A completed Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) will be provided to you, the applicant.

The role of the Police Service is to provide you with the results of the Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). It is the responsibility of the volunteer or employment agency to determine your suitability for the position.

Note: If the Vulnerable Sector Search is inconclusive a fingerprint based search will be required. If the RCMP confirms that you have received a record suspension (pardon) for a sex offence, the information will be forwarded to the Minister of Public Safety to authorize disclosure of all or part of the information contained in your file. When the information is authorized for disclosure by the Minister, the criminal record associated with your fingerprints will be returned to the Police Service and will include the pardoned sexual offence information.

At this point the Police Service will be required to obtain your consent in writing for disclosure of the record(s). When you have signed the form giving consent to release the record(s) the Police Service must forward the information to the requesting agency (employer or volunteer agency). If you do not consent to the release of the information, the Police Service will advise the requesting agency (employment or volunteer) they are unable to complete the vulnerable sector record check.
