Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)

A Vulnerable Sector Check is the most comprehensive police record check available.

It contains all the information in the first two types of checks with additional detail. However, it is designed specifically for applicants who are working in the vulnerable sector.
Who is a vulnerable person?
A vulnerable person is defined as a person who, because of their age, disability, or other circumstances, whether temporary or permanent, are
(a) in a position of dependence on others or
(b) are otherwise at a greater risk than the general population of being harmed by a person in a position or authority or trust relative to them.
The Police Vulnerable Sector Check confirms whether or not the applicant has a criminal record of convictions in Canada for which fingerprints were taken.

It also provides additional details from police files where present, such as: police contacts, non-convictions, judicial orders in effect, outstanding charges and warrants, and other potentially relevant information.

It also includes a check of convictions for sexual offences for which the individual has received a pardon or record suspension.

It is most appropriate for persons working as teachers, nurses, personal support care workers, day-care staff, retirement nursing home staff, Scout leaders, coaches, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, foster parents or anyone working with children, the elderly or persons with physical or cognitive challenges.

This type of check is only available to the residents of Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township.

Please note, if you are a student in Sault Ste. Marie attending school, you must be able to prove you are a Sault Ste. Marie or Prince Township resident to have your search done. Please bring a copy of your PUC bill or lease document in with your record check application.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service provides fingerprint services for Police Vulnerable Sector Check applicants who have received notification from our Service that this extra step is required. Please see our web page for additional information on costs and how to book an appointment.
